Hi I’m Joe, an alternative healthcare practitioner rooted in The Rolf Method of Structural Integration—an artform, physical science, and self-growth paradigm.
I started practicing Structural Integration because I experienced the effectiveness it had on my (now no longer existing) chronic pain that came from injury, poor posture, and various somato-emotional response patterns. My journey started when a severe accident in my teens landed me in a hospital bed for two weeks, unable to move or eat as I recovered from what doctors saw as a ruptured spleen and liver.
As years passed, my energy dropped, I began developing debilitating back pains, and activities that I used to enjoy became less and less enjoyable. My personality shifted as my mood became more depressed. I needed to feel better, so I tried many treatments, therapies, and movement classes with many different practitioners over a several-year period. Eventually, in 2015 I worked with Rolfer Gary Gurney from Maine and, among benefits too numerous to count, I reordered my connective tissues and became stronger and more connected to my body than I had in the years put together where I was seeing other practitioners.
Structural Integration helped me overcome the guilt and shame of my injuries. It taught me how to face my fears and overcome what held me back. Without any real 'teaching,' I naturally learned how to access support for my back by connecting to my breath and my feet, and to engage my core to initiate movement and live with a sense of inner strength. The dialogue component of the work helped facilitate emotional change and reconnect me with my spirit.
The pain reduction, and systemic benefits I received to my mood and energy as a result, inspired me to learn more and bring this work to others. I became interested in how our soft tissue and fascia become stiff, displacing our joints into unhelpful positions, and how to reverse these structural patterns to feel free in our bodies, the way most children do in theirs. I found that manual manipulation of fascia and other soft tissue is the best treatment for this and enriches our lives with greater possibilities.
Including over 15 years of commitment to the exploration and reconciliation of my own mind/body, I learned the art and science of SI at The New School for Structural Integration, a rigorous and thoughtful training school accredited by the International Association of Structural Integrators (IASI). I learned ScarWork directly from Sharon Wheeler, inventor of ScarWork. I've developed my own style of somatic dialog coaching that draws from years of experience with Hellerwork, Family Constellations, Gestalt therapy, and Nonviolent Communication (NVC). I hold a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic, a certification in Wholistic Massage Therapy from the renowned Lourdes Institute of Wholistic Studies, and I am a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). Through the years I have also received the privilege of studying with various masters of Rolfing Structural Integration, Biomechanics, Myofascial Release, Yoga, Shiatsu, and Reiki. With a regular practice, over 2,000 hours of bodywork education, and a conviction in the work of Structural Integration, I have had the privilege and pleasure of facilitating many on their paths to integration and wholeness.
When I’m not working I enjoy nerdy things, home projects and playing music. I have also worked with musicians on repatterning their bodies and expanding biomechanical principles that enhance their playing experience. My own therapeutic work is very important to me and I welcome a variety of creative and therapeutic practices into my life.
